An Amusement & Diversion for The Genteel Cyclist. Daily.

Listen here.
I'm not a particularly political person, and readers have mixed feelings about my rare polemical outbursts. I understand that. I'm not much of a cycling expert either, which is hardly news. But one thing I know pretty well, because I'm paid to know it thanks to the dayjob, is how we got into the current economic goat-rodeo that we're in. And one thing is for damn sure: It's not the fault of poor black people getting subprime mortgages, and anyone who says so -- even if they're a cycling enthusiast and advocate, and yes even if they have the nuts to race CX -- is a goddamn racist, and no friend of mine.

Just so you know. Full disclosure around here, yo.

re the so-called "financial crisis" I think the "blame" if that is the correct word should and must be spread around pretty evenly amongst borrowers whose greed or ignorance or selfishness got the better of them, banks deliberately and knowingly making bad loans in the interests of propping up their weak balance sheets, governments unable or unwilling to put in place proper regulatory regimes, and people who voted and continue to vote such loser governments into power. Now the prudent must bail out the foolhardy. Now the industrious must bail out the lazy. Now the intelligent must bail out the stupid.

congratulations on blogs of note

Well said, masterymistery. Well said, and exactly right.

RE: financial crisis. Honestly, people borrow too much. They apply for (and get, to the disgrace of the banks) too many credit cards, too many loans, too large mortgages, etc., etc., what happened to saving and paying cash for things so that you knew you could afford them? THAT is the reason finances around the world are nosediving. If you borrow, make SURE you can repay.
And kudos for the post, thanks for setting it straight.

At least someone is saying it. This crap started a long time ago and for a multitude of reasons, these loans are turning out to be scapegoats.

Nicely put. Does anyone remember Glass-Steagall?

I'm sorry--did anyone including Pinchie actually READ the article in the New York Times dated September, 1999? Hello? Racist? Poor black people getting subprime loans? I don't care what your 'dayjob' is, you don't know jack and you can't or won't read if your sole response to Doc's offering is to label him a racist.

Pinchie, do yourself a favor and slap yourself really hard in the mouth for me. Then click on your red link and actually read what Doc wrote, then read the actual article. Then go on the NYT website and read the series of articles on the credit crisis. Educate yourself a little, you toady imbecile.

Then please publish a post retracting your slanderous libel--"goddamn racist" to be exact--and don't delude yourself that I would have ever wanted to BE a friend of yours.

You don't know me or anything important about me, and you could care less, you pompous self-satisfied ignorant sophomore.

I'm sorry I ever read your rag or posted in good faith to it thinking we could enjoy some witty reparte. I forgot that your kind loves to pontificate, lecture, badger, and nag, all the while erecting straw men of the opposition in order to prove your prowess in verbal skewering. But woe to the one who challenges any of the holy edicts of liberalism.

Dan C: you're still my friend, and I forgive you for leading me to this apparatchik asshole via your blog. If you can get a word in edgewise with all the diarrhea of the mouth here, you might comment on my character assassination.

There, I feel so much better now--a little ad hominem goes a long way, que pensez-vous? To paraphrase Bethoven's inscription on the Eroica symphony "to the memory of a great blog".

duh!

Commentary: I figured that's about what your pea-sized brain could handle here Mr? Pinchface. It appears from reading your drivel that you think posting a Hemingway-sized post would magically make it good or true. Of course, like Hemingway you are delusional, albeit poorer. Only simpleton's point the finger at politics to blame for problems, yet at the same time want the same to give, give, give. Of course, an airbag, such as yourself would never ask about your part in the mess. Like a juvenile I'm sure you'll try to shat on my comments as one who is "Republican", "racist" or any other simple-minded "put down" like you did to other former readers of your blog who disagreed with you. I struggle like everyone else, but I won't blame it on party-lines. No, as any other American who has gone to foreign soil to fight for and enjoyed the "land of the plenty" I will seek to live in the "land of the rebuilding". I do this without blaming anyone, bowing to no one and seeking to do the best with the OPPORTUNITY we all have. Of course, I'm not sure you've read this far, but if so...congratulations. Get off your self-proclaimed soapbox and go back to posting on whatever it is you know. Save the posing for hair bands and Britney Spears, both of which you're more likely better qualified to "know" than politics and financial crisis. Thanks for wasting an hour of my life reading your crap and posting this!
