But his worst crime was riding that godawful Quintana Roo tri-bike

Authorities are trying to figure out how many banks David "the Bicycle Bandit" Voss robbed before he was caught on September 7. It looks like it may have been as many as 30 in 16 different states. But he didn't work exclusively on two wheels.

He apparently robbed most of the banks single-handedly, usually handing the teller a note claiming to have a gun. From there, he’d ride a bike, usually bought in that city, to a nearby getaway car.

And here we were picturing him in the breakdown lane with a Burley full of unmarked 20s, pulled behind a green Crosscheck.

Because Voss hanged himself in his prison cell, we'll never be able to confirm that what he was really doing was working up the cash and the trade-ins for a custom-built Parlee, which would have required hitting a few more banks and at least one Trek Madone.

Another lesson: Crime does not pay. He shoulda kept his job as a bike mechanic at Erik's.
