Imagine: "Gives the rider a choice of several gears! Uh, pretty sure derailleurs and internal hubs were in existence by 1954, right? In fact, Paul de Vivie and Joanny Panel invented a working derailleur in 1914. Le Cyclo produced the first commercially successful shifter in 1924-- a two-gear job that mounted on the seat stay.
But these bikes were woefully underchained.
