(Dirt) Road Trip

What do you do once you’ve graduated from St. Benedict’s and / or St. John’s? Why, bike across Asia and perhaps Europe, of course.

Fueled by Rice is a group of five intending to bike through rural areas of the Asian and European continents. Along the way they will play music in villages spreading good will and advocating reduced carbon emissions.



Another aspect they are trying to promote is slower paced living. Given they are proposing to ride through some quite rural, third-world areas of the globe, where life probably doesn’t get much slower, one can only wonder if they are really CIA Operatives and are experimenting with time travel using unsuspecting locals as their guinea pigs.

Who needs the Swiss countryside when you've got the Driftless Zone three hours drive south? Hans and I were in the Viroqua, WI area last week and got a little taste of roadie heaven... this has got to be some of the finest riding on the planet. Wisconsin paves roads that would be dirt here Minnesota, creating what are effectively 30-foot-wide dedicated bike lanes that wind up and down through sleepy coulees, past massive bluffs and pastoral farms, up savagely long hills that end in breathtaking vistas and screaming descents... are those enough adjectives to make you check it out?
