Tell me again why track bikes are safer WITHOUT brakes?

This one will go into the classic crashes file. Looks like a true baby split. The God of Cycling could easily pick up a spare on the next roll.

What really seals the deal is the pinwheeling young fellow on the rail, don't you think?

the lack of brakes makes track bikes safer because there is "nothing" to get stabbed by on your bike or the bikes of the others.

if you check out the wounds sustained by most of the crashed riders (in this crash and most other velodrome crashes), you will notice that the riders only have minor surface wounds and burns. no stabbings, cuts, or stitches.

by making brakes illegal on the track, the risk of getting stabbed by brake levers and other components is reduced. for the same reason, levers on wheel axles and seatpost clamps tend to be banned from tracks.

hope that answers the question in the title of the post.

i also remember hearing something from an ole timer about preventing surprising changes in speed that would cause chasing riders to rear-end those ahead of them, but that seems less likely to me in a race context.

cheers

ps: the cartwheeling kid gave me a good laugh
