The Wal-Mart Bike Shop, part 2

A few months ago we asked what the Wal-Mart of bike shops would be. Turns out, the answer really may be Wal-Mart.

Flying in the face of our longstanding complaint about Dynacrap bikes and the department stores that sell them, Wal-Mart recently announced that they're rolling out their own line of carbon bikes equipped with Ultegra.

Now, in at least one store in Texas, they are installing a whole bike shop with real live bike mechanics. Personally, I doubt whether the stronger mom & pop stores will suffer much, but you can bet larger regional chains like Erik's in the Midwest, or Performance in the Southeast, are going to feel some heat, as the exodus begins of suburban weekend warriors that do all their thinking with their wallets.

I'ts kind of like driving down the highway and seeing some "Fellow" driving a pontiac Aztec; Somewhere in the back of his mind he thought hey, tht's cool, and the synapses fired helping that individual to think that he was making a good decision. No matter how insulated an individual is, when you show up to a group ride on your Moto-be-Junk, the gentle reminders from your peers will remind you, that you are the only person that "bought it" . and hey most Walmart shoppers will think a bike should be a $100 Chineese cheap date.

I love the fact that the other accessories listed next to the bike features/specs page are $15 "aero" helmets in red or blue. Points up what an oddball inventory item this is.

You snobs are just too dumb to know a GOOD DEAL when you see one! What the hell do you mean moto-be-junk?! Like your Cannondale or whatever over-marketed taiwanese crap you ride is any better? It's all got the same group give or take a some twos and fews.

I'm shopping WALMART! I'm proud to say it. Maybe I'll quit my job as a bike messenger and get a job as a mechanic or a salesman at WalMart's BikeMart? That'd be RAD!!!!!

moto-be-junk. I love that saying. If memory serves me correctly, Tim Trudeau coined that term in reference to one Jeff Colbert's gleeming new steed (that he got a screamin' deal on by the way). Anyone care to dispute that shit? Gary Fisher vs. Joe Murray style?

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought that about Colberts full suspension SB
