Bad news for the "human on a stick"

Our correspondent in New York tell us that Governor Spitzer has achieved his greatest feat yet. Yesterday, he vetoed a bill that would have allowed Segways to spread their silliness into bike lanes and bike paths.

The governor vetoed the bill because Segways and bicycles are too different to be used in similar places, and allowing Segways on roads would cause a "number of public safety issues," a state source said. The governor's office noted that the Segway owner's manual says it is not intended for use on roads.

That's the first step. Now if he can get the triathalon bikes out of Central Park, we might consider a trip back to Manhattan.

This is sound public policy for difficult times: Style-conscious New Yorkers found that it was a bitch getting those chopped bullhorn handlebars and deep-V rims onto their Segways.
