The vehicle with vestigial pedals -- sort of like tonsils or an appendix

From this morning's papers, it seems that electric bikes are beginning to jump onto the bike path.

Which begs a couple of questions. First, just because a motor vehicle is not driven by internal combustion, does that make it legit for the bike lane? Second--and kind of the opposite question--shouldn't these things be forced to the road if they're traveling faster than say 10 MPH?

And finally, is there any place to ride an electric bike and NOT look like a lazy dork?

I have little but contempt for electric bikes (unless it's a work-bike). But here's two questions for you: Isn't an electric bike just a vulnerable in motor vehicle traffic? If there is a bike lane present, isn't the traffic that much MORE dangerous? I guess this is shading into the John-Forester-type issues in the next post.
