Portland + Copenhagen = True Love (Ish.)

Reader Tim K. has a nice point about Portland in the comments -- I'd put the City of Roses right up there with bike polo, erectile dysfunction, and Velib as favorite bike memes of the mainstream media.

Portland is a great cycling town. And like any great cycling town, there are equal measures of cool folks, poseurs, angry Freds, couch bikes, tall bikes, and the whole pageant of modern cycling culcha, plus terrible weather.

I'm watching with envy as a sort of international romance blooms between Copenhagen and Portland, but suddenly there is a sour taste in my mouth. Copenhagen's latest mash note includes the following remark about Portland, affixed to a salacious photo of a Portland cycle chick in a polka-dot dress:

Not an ounce of lycra or spandex or bike gear to be seen, thank goodness.

As if.

Aw geeze, give me a break. Even BikeSnobNYC recognizes the futility and empty pretentiousness of a statement like this.

Portland and Copenhagen: Call me after your next century in jeans, boxers, and heavy cold rain, we'll talk about the worldwide conspiracy to put chamois butter into every home. I'm sure we could conference Grant on the call.
