The city that cyclists forgot
About a month ago, we asked: Which American city will be the first to attempt a Velib-scale program like the one that is putting 20,000 free bikes on the streets of Paris?
Today, it looks like we have our answer: Chicago. No shit! The Democrat mayor [of Chicago, Richard Daley], himself a cyclist, said he was "greatly impressed" with the Paris network of self-service bicycles, which has clocked up more than 3.7 million rides since its launch in mid-July. Following talks with his Paris counterpart Bertrand Delanoe, Daley said Chicago may launch a similar system "very shortly."
Now if Mayor Daley can work on making his city a bit more "cycle-compatible," it won't seem so much like throwing 20,000 forks into a soup kitchen.
