When style and safety clash, chapter #2912

Here's a nifty new bike light that runs without batteries or generator: It connects to your skewer and hub, and it runs all the time-- day or night.

So you're thinking: But it never goes off.

Right! Over in Denmark they require all cars to have their lights on day and night, and they're suggesting that bikes do the same.

Danish studies show that with bike lights on 24 hours a day, the risk of accidents including bikes falls by 33%. Simple and effective traffic safety.

So, young hipster: Are you willing to run lights day and night?

Oh, and what about brakes and a helmet and reflectors?

Hiawatha Cyclery carries these Reelights. There are two types, one with a capacitor to keep 'em going at stop signs, one without that just work when you're moving. I think they have both. Also, if you run a generator hub with the Shimano front light (like I do on one bike), the front light has an LED which is always on...the switch just turns off the incadescent bulb bit.

We have carried them since we opened in early 2006. Lots sold, no issues reported.

One legendary local rider, who shall remain nameless, has thousands of miles on them thru all sorts of weather.

We have both types -- original and the new and improved with capacitor.
