Because Wall Street is rife with secret stashes of lycra

The Wall Street Journal today introduces the suits to Phil Southerland and Team Type 1 -- a pro cycling team consisting entirely of Type 1 diabetics. TT1, you may recall, won this year's Race Across America.

Southerland hopes to do for diabetes research what Lance has done for cancer (to which we have to say: Someone's got to eventually win eight Tours de France, right? Or maybe six clean ones.)

Anyway, we noticed this interesting tidbit:

New technology has made it easier for diabetic athletes. The cycling team uses continuous glucose monitors, which track blood sugar constantly and sound alarms if it goes outside of safe ranges. Team members also use wireless insulinpumps, which deliver insulin as needed without a tangle of tubes and wires.

We can think of a few non-diabetic teams that might like to get their hands on this technology... to, you know, automate the intake of, uh, energy drinks. Yeah.

Winning the RAAM was a great accomplishment. But can Team Type 1 do something about those ugly, ugly Tour de Cure jerseys we've been seeing on the road for years?
