For cleaning glass and sand and small rocks off your tires when you inadvertently ride through crap you'd otherwise avoid. If I'm not waering gloves, I'll sometimes use my water bottle or even my shoes, stick them in there as we roll, and scrape off the garbage to avoid a flat.
